  1. Luke 6:12 This is an important moment in Luke’s eyes, as shown by the fact that Jesus prepares himself through prayer. The apostles are twelve in number in order to make clear their future work, which is comparable to that of the twelve tribes of Israel: that is, they are the builders of the new People of God (see Acts 1:25). The word “apostle” is derived from a Greek word meaning “sent,” “missionary.”
